Vintage YoTown Ghost Tales

The Last Guest at The Tod Hotel

For decades, The Tod Hotel was Youngstown’s crown jewel — a place where travelers, musicians, and steel barons gathered beneath glittering chandeliers on West Federal Street. Its ballroom hosted swing bands, its lobby gleamed with marble and brass. But when the steel mills began to fall silent, so did the laughter that filled its halls.

That’s when the stories began.

Room 313

In the spring of 1952, a jazz singer named Lila Monroe checked into The Tod for what was meant to be a weekend show. Witnesses recalled her voice — smoky, mesmerizing — the kind that could quiet an entire room. But on the second night, she never appeared on stage. The doorman later swore he saw her step into the elevator wearing a white evening gown… and that the doors never opened again.

Her room key was found dangling in the lobby the next morning.

The Song in the Walls

When the hotel closed in the 1970s, demolition crews reported strange disturbances. Radios turned on by themselves, always tuned to static — except once, when a faint melody drifted through. A jazz tune. Female voice. Unrecorded.

One worker claimed to see the outline of a woman’s hand pressed against a third-floor window, leaving behind a fogged print.

A Note to the Curious

Today, nothing remains of The Tod but its foundation beneath the parking lot that replaced it. Still, some say if you park there on a warm spring night, roll down your windows, and listen carefully, you’ll hear Lila humming through the static of your car radio — a song that never ends, and a voice still waiting for her final encore.

🐾 Pet Sitting 4 Paws:
Care That Feels Like Home

When you meet Karen Gulling, it’s easy to see why so many pet parents trust her with their furry family members. With a heart full of compassion and more than 15 years of experience, Karen has built Pet Sitting 4 Paws on a foundation of love, reliability, and genuine care.

Her journey began in a simple, honest way — she couldn’t find anyone she fully trusted to care for her own animals. That experience inspired her to become that person for others. Today, she provides dependable pet-sitting services for families throughout Boardman, Poland, Canfield, North Lima, and even Austintown — ensuring every pet feels safe, loved, and comfortable while their owners are away.

Karen says her favorite part of the job is “the love for animals, all shapes and sizes!” Her clients often become friends, and she treasures every relationship she’s built along the way. Whether she’s caring for a playful pup, a shy cat, or an older companion who just needs a gentle hand, she brings warmth and calm into every home she visits.

The photo above perfectly captures the spirit of her work — peaceful, trusted, and full of heart. It’s more than just pet care; it’s about creating comfort and connection for both animals and their humans.

If you’re looking for a sitter who will treat your pets as if they were her own, Karen at Pet Sitting 4 Paws is just a call away.

Christmas in the Woods —
Where Fall Meets Holiday Magic 🌲🎁

This weekend in Columbiana, Ohio

Who says you need snow to feel the spirit of Christmas?
This weekend, the woods of Columbiana will glow with golden sunlight instead of frost, and honestly — we’re here for it.

Imagine walking through winding wooded paths under the crisp scent of pine and bonfire smoke. The air is soft and 70°, the leaves crunch underfoot, and the sound of Christmas music mingles with laughter, kettle corn, and the sweet scent of cinnamon almonds.

Welcome to Christmas in the Woods — where holiday spirit meets small-town charm and artisan magic.

🎄 What Makes It So Special

This isn’t your typical craft fair. It’s a storybook village come to life —
a place where every booth feels like stepping into a Christmas card.
Local artisans hand-carve, hand-pour, hand-stitch, and hand-bake everything right in front of you. You’ll find one-of-a-kind gifts, rustic décor, old-fashioned candy, and yes… more fudge than you can handle.

Take a break by the live music stage, sip hot cocoa (or an iced latte — it is 70° after all), and wander through hundreds of decorated cabins filled with creativity and cheer. It’s the kind of event that turns strangers into friends — and sparks that childlike excitement that says, “Okay… now it’s really Christmas.”

☀️ A Different Kind of Holiday Magic

No need for heavy coats or frozen fingers — this weekend’s forecast is absolutely perfect for strolling the woods.
Bring the family, grab your favorite fall-to-holiday outfit, and enjoy a day filled with twinkle lights, smiles, and sunshine.

Whether you come for the shopping, the nostalgia, or just to kick off the season with something real, this is the place to be.

The Art of Staying Connected—
One Card at a Time

By Leann Tallman

An artists’s love of Christmas tradition.

When I was a kid, my Uncle George had a special way of showing love.

He didn’t live close—Columbus was nearly three hours away—but every holiday, milestone, or “just because” moment, there’d be a greeting card in the mail.

Not just for birthdays or Christmas, either.

He’d send one when our annual NYC trip was exactly 60 days away, when I made the majorette team, or when he just felt like saying hi. Each card felt like a hug from miles away.

After he passed in 2001, my mom quietly took over his tradition.

And now, years later, that same spirit of connection is living on in a new way—through my Uncle John.

Recently retired from teaching high school art, Uncle John has spent decades bringing creativity to others. For years, he’s painted and designed greeting cards for our family and friends—each one featuring his own original artwork. Nostalgic winter scenes, Santa Claus with twinkling eyes, a couple dancing under falling snow, the same ice skates my aunt used to wear, even Christmas cookies my kids decorated one year— all with his brother’s namesake and signature, GEORGE.

This season, he’s sharing that joy with the community.

They’re offering boxed sets of his Christmas cards (10 or 25 per box) so others can experience the same warmth, connection, and small-town nostalgia that our family has cherished for decades.

Because sometimes, the simplest gestures—like sending a card—become the memories that last forever.

Boxes are limited. Call 330-398-5798 to pre-order yours and share a little love this season.

Bar Bingo:
Where Luck, Laughter, and Lager Collide

If you think bingo is only for church basements and retirement homes, you’ve clearly never yelled “BINGO!” over the sound of a jukebox and a room full of cheering twenty- somethings. Welcome to bar bingo, the rowdy, laughter-filled twist on a classic game that’s sweeping through the Youngstown, Ohio area and beyond.

At its core, bar bingo is beautifully simple: you grab a drink, snag a bingo card, and hope the next number called gets you one square closer to glory (or at least a free round). But this isn’t your grandma’s quiet night of dabbers and doilies. In Youngstown’s bars and taverns, bingo night feels more like a stand-up show mixed with a friendly competition — often hosted by a local comedian or bartender with a microphone and zero fear of roasting the players.

Take the Westside Bowl, for example. Every Tuesday, locals pack in for their infamous “S#!T Talking Bar Bingo,” where the jokes fly as fast as the bingo balls. Or The Varsity Club, where the Tuesday night crowd is just as passionate about winning the $5 coverall as they are about the wings. Even Tangiers Bar & Pizza in Struthers keeps things lively, mixing bingo with drink specials and late-night DJ sets.

What makes bar bingo such a hit isn’t the prizes (though a free pizza or $50 bar tab never hurts), it’s the atmosphere. It’s a rare social game that doesn’t require skill, strategy, or athletic ability. Everyone’s on equal footing; it’s pure chance and pure fun. And since rounds are quick and drinks are flowing, the energy stays high.

There’s also a charming unpredictability to it. You might go home with nothing but a hangover, or you might walk away with a hundred bucks and a new best friend. Either way, you’ll have a story to tell and probably a few blurry photos to prove it.

So, next time you’re in Youngstown on a slow Tuesday night, skip the Netflix queue and hit up a local bar bingo event instead. It’s the perfect mix of competition, camaraderie, and comic relief. It is proof that sometimes, all it takes to turn an ordinary night into an unforgettable one is a bingo card, a beer, and a bit of luck.
