Family-Friendly Things to Do

Thursday, Dec. 18 – Sunday, Dec. 21

The holidays are here ! Fun memories to be made are listed below:

If you’re looking for something to do with the kids that doesn’t involve a long drive or a ton of planning, here are a few solid options around Youngstown this weekend.

A holiday classic that never gets old. Walk through beautifully decorated historic rooms and visit Santa’s Village at the Arms Family Museum. Open throughout the weekend and great for all ages.

Festive trees, seasonal displays, and a peaceful walk through one of Youngstown’s favorite spots. Perfect for a daytime outing with kids or grandparents in tow.

A holiday production at Stambaugh Auditorium that mixes music, storytelling, and Christmas spirit. Shows run Friday and Saturday evenings, with a Sunday matinee that’s especially family-friendly.

An easy win if you just want to pile in the car and enjoy something festive. The drive-through holiday lights are free and open nightly.

Hey Youngstown,

There’s a lot happening around town right now. Some of it big, some of it small, but all of it part of what makes this place feel like home.

This week, we’re keeping it simple. A few things to know. A few things to check out. And a reminder that there’s still a lot of good happening right here.

Around town:

Local spots are gearing up for the season in their own way. Some are rolling out specials. Some are hosting small events. Some are just showing up every day and doing things the right way. Those are the places worth paying attention to.

If you’ve been meaning to try somewhere new, now’s a good time. If you’ve got a favorite, this is your sign to go back.

Coming up:

There’s no shortage of things to do if you’re looking for a reason to get out of the house. From community events to live music to family-friendly stuff, you don’t have to go far to find something worth your time.

We’ll keep highlighting what’s actually happening, not just what’s being advertised the loudest.

A quick reminder:

YoTown Scoop exists for the people who live here. The ones who support local. The ones who care where their money goes. The ones who want to stay in the loop without scrolling all day.

If you ever see something happening around town that deserves a spotlight, send it our way. This is a community thing, not a corporate thing.

More soon,

YoTown Scoop

Local life. Real stories.

P.S. Show some local love for the Casual Pint. They’ll be closing their doors at the end of this year. Bid a heartfelt farewell with a glass of your fave beverage and enjoy some music

On selected evenings (e.g., Dec 20, Dec 21, Dec 27–28), the gardens glow outside with twinkling light displays and occasional character appearances. Wrap up warm and enjoy a gentle stroll followed by a hot drink.

  6. Stambaugh Auditorium Holiday Music & Concerts (Look for Dec dates)

Check Stambaugh Auditorium’s schedule for holiday and winter concerts around Dec 18 (like Christmas Madrigals or other festive performances). It’s a comfortable indoor cultural outing with great acoustics and easy seating.

  7. Visit the Butler Institute of American Art (Any day)

For a calm, inspiring indoor outing, the Butler Institute offers rotating and permanent art exhibits seniors often love. Perfect for an afternoon of wandering at a steady pace.

  8. Mill Creek MetroParks Trails and Winter Walks (Any day)

If the weather’s mild, short walks at Mill Creek Park or Fellows Riverside Gardens paths bring fresh air without needing a whole afternoon. Stop for coffee or lunch nearby afterward.

    Men’s YSU Basketball

    Women’s YSU Basketball

Catch a home basketball game at the Beeghly Center for some lively local sports action and social time indoors. Check YSU’s full December schedule before you go.

  10. Local Library Visits & Community Center Activities (All Week)

Many Mahoning County libraries and senior community centers host gentle social activities, book discussions, and occasional talks or gentle exercise classes — a low-key way to connect and stay engaged indoors. (Check individual calendars as dates approach.)

Protect Your Home When Freezing Temps Arrive in Youngstown

This frigid stretch is the kind of cold that can quietly cause big problems at home, especially with your pipes. A little prevention now can save you a lot of stress later.

Here are a few simple things you can do while temperatures stay this low:

Let faucets drip slightly overnight so water keeps moving.

Open cabinets under sinks to let warm air reach the pipes.

Pay extra attention to pipes on exterior walls or in unheated areas.

If you are leaving town, keep the heat set high enough to protect your plumbing.

Most frozen or burst pipes do not give much warning. They usually show up when the damage is already done.

If a pipe does freeze or burst, 1-800-Plumber + Air is ready to respond quickly and get things under control before it turns into a bigger mess. One call is all it takes, and they will be on the way.

Stay warm and take care of your home through this cold snap.
