The Phantom of Idora Park:
The Last Waltz

Idora Park wasn’t just roller coasters and cotton candy—it was Youngstown’s stage. Couples in gowns and tuxedos spun across the Cinderella Ballroom, while the calliope’s music spilled from the carousel outside. To step into Idora was to step into a dream.

But when the fire of April 26, 1984 reduced the midway to ashes, the dream soured. The Wildcat was gutted, the arcade destroyed, and the ballroom darkened. Idora Park never reopened.

The Phantom’s Waltz

Unlike the usual stories of flickering flashlights or snapped twigs, most Phantom accounts are tied not to the coasters—but to the ballroom.

Former employees swear that, long after the park’s closure, the sound of dancing feet echoed from the scorched hall. A janitor reported hearing Glenn Miller’s “Moonlight Serenade” drifting through the rafters, though the record player had long been removed.

One woman, passing the site at dusk, claimed she saw chandeliers blazing through shattered windows and dozens of couples twirling in ghostly rhythm. At the center of them all stood a masked man in a tailcoat—bowing, then vanishing as the lights snuffed out.

The Calling Card

Unlike the campfire tales of footsteps in the weeds, this legend carries a strange token. Visitors who linger often find a playing card slipped into their coat pocket—always an Ace of Spades, crisp as if freshly printed. Locals say it’s the Phantom’s way of “inviting” you to the dance floor.

Who Was He?

Some say he was Idora’s last bandleader, unwilling to leave the stage. Others insist he was a magician who performed escape acts on the midway, only to be caught in a final trick during the fire.

But the ballroom regulars have their own idea: he was no employee at all, but a heartbroken guest, replaying his last waltz with the one he lost in the flames.

The Warning

If you walk Mill Creek near the old grounds and hear faint music, don’t mistake it for the wind. They say the Phantom is still leading his dancers, still bowing to an invisible crowd, still waiting for his encore.

And if you ever find the Ace of Spades in your pocket—be careful. It means the Phantom has chosen you as his next partner.

Tune in for the whole month of October for Vintage Youngstown Haunts…

Level up Your Small Business

📡 OpenAI Lands in Lordstown

Ever heard of ChatGPT?
Yeah, THAT OPENAI

Mahoning Valley just leveled up.
Lordstown was officially tapped as one of only five sites in the entire U.S. for a $500 billion artificial intelligence hub. Think: data centers, cutting-edge infrastructure, and a chance to put our Valley on the global tech map.

Why it matters:

  • Jobs + investment rolling in.

  • Smarter design — this isn’t your grandma’s server farm. Closed-loop cooling keeps water use low and infrastructure stable.

  • Momentum builder — once one giant moves in, others follow.

Big things are happening in Lordstown. The community, long known for its automotive roots, has been tapped as one of only five locations in the entire country for a massive artificial intelligence hub. Backed by OpenAI, SoftBank, and Oracle, the project is part of a $500 billion effort to build the infrastructure needed for the future of AI.

What makes this exciting isn’t just the scale, but the design. Instead of building a giant energy-hogging facility, the Lordstown center will use advanced technology like closed-loop cooling systems to minimize water use and reduce strain on local utilities. Local leaders see this as a sign of things to come — investment, new jobs, and the kind of momentum that puts Mahoning Valley on the national stage.

For a place that once defined American car manufacturing, Lordstown is now positioning itself to help define the future of technology.

🛡️ Poland Township: Safe & Sound

Congrats to Poland!!

Cue the applause — Poland Township just ranked 5th safest community in all of Ohio, according to Travel Safe. The ranking comes from Travel Safe, which looked at crime statistics statewide. Poland Township’s numbers came in well below average, with almost no violent crime and property crime rates far lower than most places.

Local leaders and police credit strong community involvement and a focus on proactive policing. From responding quickly to resident concerns to small improvements like new street lights where they’re needed most, the township has built a reputation for listening and acting. The result is a community where people truly feel secure.

For Mahoning Valley residents, it’s another reminder that this corner of Ohio isn’t just about grit and hard work — it’s also about neighbors looking out for one another and creating a place where families can thrive.

Findings:

  • Violent crime? Practically nonexistent.

  • Property crime? Way below average.

  • Community policing + quick fixes (like new street lights) keep everyone safer.

Living in a place this safe means less worry, more time for what matters — family, fun, and a little well-earned self-care.

Safety never goes out of style. Congrats, Poland!!

Spooky Season in Youngstown

The annual Ghost Walk will be returning to the streets of downtown Warren, Ohio this October! Put on by the Trumbull County Historical Society and the Fine Arts Council of Trumbull County, the Ghost Walk is an eagerly anticipated and cherished tradition that has entertained the people of our area since the 1980’s. Those who attend look forward to hearing the real-life historical and sometimes scary stories of Trumbull County’s past as they are led to the site of those same stories along the sidewalks of downtown Warren.

Attendees are led by a guide holding a lantern as they depart from the Presbyterian church and head up Mahoning Avenue to places like the Kinsman House, which was an important stop on the underground railroad for people seeking freedom as they escaped the horrors of slavery. Actors in costume come out at each stop to tell their stories, playing characters from those same stories to bring history to life for everyone gathered around. You will learn of a lot of fascinating events that happened here in the past while enjoying the beautifully restored downtown Warren area.

Police are stationed along the route to ensure attendees can safely cross the streets on their way to where another ghost awaits to tell them the next story. Along with the Kinsman House, you will visit places like the Hariett Taylor Upton House, John Stark Edwards House, Pioneer Cemetery, and several others. History really comes to life before your very eyes as the dedicated actors transport you back in time to learn the spooky and dark events of their day.

Tours depart from the First Presbyterian Church (just look for the tall steeple) every fifteen minutes beginning at 6:30pm with the last tour departing for the scary fun at 9pm. Tickets are available for purchase at the church, or you can buy them ahead of time here

So, if you are looking for something engaging and rewarding to do this October, grab your “boo” and check out the Ghost Walk. It is a lot of fun, and it is right here in The Yo!

The Yo’s Favorite Rock Rebels:
The Huckin Fillbillys
Bring the Fire Every Show

Huckin Fillbillys: Local Legends

Does one even need an introduction for a local band as legendary as the Huckin Fillbillys?

Any music lover from the Youngstown area has heard of the Fillbillys, and every one of them of a certain age has seen or heard them in action. The band is always active, bringing their high-energy, high-volume energy to different venues all year long. Whether it be opening for the headlining act at the Warren Amphitheater, playing your favorite festival, or providing the soundtrack for your Saturday night out, the Huckin Fillibillys are a staple of the local music scene.

The band is fronted by local music icon Jimmi Migliozzi, who is a longtime veteran of both the local and national music scene. Known on stage as his alter ego, “Elvis McCoy,” Migliozzi brings a masterful presence to the stage as he expertly interacts with the crowd, weaving in interactive commentary throughout the evening as he belts out classic rock staples everyone will enjoy. His ability to keep the audience engaged on multiple levels speaks to his experience and natural charisma.

Mick Rispoli, aka “Doc McHooligan,” provides the guitar power for the band. He fuels the Fillbilly sound with the crunchy guitar hooks and raw power chords that will thrill lovers of rock music. His ability to fill the spaces between the pulsing sounds of his rhythm section gives the band a raw, yet powerful sound.

Gary Jones, aka “Boo T Licious,” is the Fillbilly’s bass player. His thumping rhythm always has the dance floor filled with bodies as he keeps a precise rhythm for the others to play off of. His backing vocals are the perfect compliment to Migliozzi’s energetic lead vocals.

Finally, there is Bret “The Kid” Miller who mans the drums. Only nineteen years old, Miller is a musical prodigy from the next generation of rock. Watching him perform is just as entertaining as listening, as his playing reminds one of some of the better drummers of the greatest era of rock and roll. He is the perfect fit for a band known for pumping venues full of energy and rock and roll adrenaline.

So, check out the Huckin Fillbillys the next time you are looking for a night filled with live music. They are a proven band that never lets you down. You will find yourself remembering why a good rock show sends you home smiling, and they’re right here in The Yo!
